Golden Retriever, originally developed as gundogs, have become extremely popular in variety of functions including hunting dog, search and rescue dog, guide dogs for blind and deaf persons, family pets and drug detection due to its intelligence, versatility, obedience, loyalty and gentle temperaments. Besides Labrador and German Shepherd, Golden Retriever is also one of the most popular breeds of dogs in the United States.
Golden Retriever has a wide muzzle, shorter legs, and shorter tail. Its eyes are round, dark and expressive. American type Golden Retrievers are slightly less stocky and lankier than the British varieties. They have a dense and water resistant coat that comes in various shades of lustrous gold and in dark golden colors and that is why they are named Golden Retrievers. They are most kindly, friendly and lovely dogs with their masters as well as with strangers and combined with its gentle disposition, it makes them poor guard dogs. Golden Retrievers rank fourth in the list of most intelligent dog breeds. The average lifespan of Golden Retrievers is 15 years.
