Pit Bull is the common term that is used to express several breeds of dogs such as American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier, and Staffordshire Bull Terrier. All the pit bull dogs have a common history and origins and therefore share some of the common characteristics with bulldogs and terriers. The name pit bull is also often used to describe bull terriers. Pit bulls have been developed by cross breeding bulldogs and terriers.

American Pit Bull Terrier is the breed that has been developed to combine the strength, agility and athleticism of the bulldogs and gameness of the terriers. Originally the pit bulls were developed in Scotland, Ireland and England and came to the United States with immigrants from these countries. In America, the pit bulls are often used as catch dogs for wild cattle and hogs, to hunt and drive livestock and as family companions. In the twentieth century, many pit bull dogs were developed for their fighting prowess and then after the bull terriers have been replaced by pit bulls as the first choice for dog fighting.
