American type Golden Retrievers are slightly less stocky and lankier than the British varieties. They have a dense and water resistant coat that comes in various shades of lustrous gold and in dark golden colors and that is why they are named Golden Retrievers. They are most kindly, friendly and lovely dogs with their masters as well as with strangers and combined with its gentle disposition, it makes them poor guard dogs. Golden Retrievers rank fourth in the list of most intelligent dog breeds. The average lifespan of Golden Retrievers is 15 years.
